Chapter 1

Thistle Moonglow raised his tiny staff toward the sky and waited for the moon to answer. It didn't. He was no taller than a mushroom, with a silver beard that glowed faintly in the dark, and he had spent all night trying to gather moonlight. He needed that light for a spell — a spell strong enough to wake the sleeping heart of the ancient forest. But the great trees of MistVale grew too close together. Their branches wove into a thick roof overhead. Not one thread of moonlight reached the forest floor. He tried the spell anyway. He whispered the words and lifted his staff. A weak spark sputtered at its tip, then died. The spell had nothing to feed on. Thistle sat down on a root and sighed. Without open sky, his magic was useless. A soft rustle came from the ferns. Thistle turned. A tiny girl stepped into the clearing on quiet feet. She had pearly skin, feathered white ears, and enormous silver eyes that caught what little glow his beard gave off. She wore a feathered cloak that trailed behind her like mist. It was Luna Featherwhisper, the owlfolk apprentice who lived nearby and studied spells she rarely dared to cast aloud. "Your light keeps failing," she said softly, not quite meeting his eyes. "I've watched you three nights now." Thistle laughed, more surprised than embarrassed. "Three nights, and you never said hello?" Her ears twitched. She clutched a small book to her chest. "I didn't want to bother you. But you're looking in the wrong place." She pointed past the trees, where the canopy thinned. "There's a break in the branches. Over water." Thistle followed her finger. Curiosity pulled him up at once. "Show me." She led him through the ferns until the trees opened above a wide pond. Cattails and wildflowers ringed its edge. Lily pads floated on the still surface, and colored gems glittered along the bottom. Here the canopy split clean apart. Moonlight poured down and pooled on the water, unbroken and bright. Thistle's eyes went huge. "It's perfect," he breathed. "The water holds the light like a bowl." He waded to the pond's edge and raised his staff again. This time he did not aim at the sky. He aimed at the glowing water. He spoke the words. The moonlight rose off the surface in silver ribbons and wound around his staff. The spark caught. It grew. It held. Luna gasped and stepped back. The light was far stronger than either of them expected. It spilled over the banks and lit the whole clearing white. The gems in the pond began to hum. Then the ground trembled beneath their feet. Thistle stumbled. The gathered light did not fade — it sank into the earth and vanished. Somewhere deep below, something long asleep had felt it. And now, Thistle realized with a chill, it was beginning to stir.
