Thornwald Whiskers stood at the edge of the clearing where the prints ended. He'd spent three weeks tracking something that shouldn't exist, logging every detail in his notebook. The pattern was there. He could feel it. But for the first time in his career, the mystery wouldn't crack. Then the stranger collapsed at the cabin door just after dawn. The man wore a shredded blue flannel, torn and bloodied, with silver-blue wolf hair caught in the fabric. He claimed he'd survived three nights with the thing Thornwald had been tracking. Said it had the wrong sound, the wrong weight. The exact words Thornwald had written in his notes. But when Thornwald brought the stranger inside, he noticed something off. Tucked in the man's coat pocket was a pair of reading glasses, clean and unscratched. The lenses caught the firelight. No one survives three nights in the forest with the thing that moves wrong and keeps their glasses that pristine. Thornwald set his notebook on the table between them. The stranger's eyes flicked to the notebook, then away too fast. Thornwald knew that look. This wasn't a survivor. This was someone who'd read his reports. Someone who knew what he'd been logging. The mystery hadn't cracked open, but it had just changed shape entirely.
