Chapter 6

Tikker crawled out from the jazz club at dawn. The frost-pepper stayed behind in the cooler, safe with Dallyho. Only the ghost pepper ash rode inside Tikker's shell now, sealed and dry. Weeks of hunting followed. Across the desert, Tikker cracked rocks and sniffed dry riverbeds. One by one, five more rare spices went into the shell. Seven in all, counting the frost-pepper. The feast was finally within reach. But a new trouble gnawed at Tikker. The ghost pepper ash and one new spice, a smoked red salt, fought each other in every test. Tikker could not trust its own recipe. Tikker found shelter at a low building ringed with cactus and bright blooms. A red striped awning hung over the door. A pot of soup steamed on a stove inside. It was a soup kitchen, open to anyone who wandered in from the sand. Tikker crept through the door and settled near the warm pot. Strings of small glowing bulbs hung between wooden poles outside, swaying in the wind. The light felt kind. Tikker opened its shell and spread its spices on the floor. Tikker pinched ghost pepper ash and smoked salt together into one rub. It pressed the rub against a strip of dried root. The two spices clashed at once. The ash burned sharp and bitter. The salt turned sour and flat. The flavors shoved against each other, and the test rub tasted spoiled. Tikker tried again with less ash. The salt still soured. Tikker tried again with less salt. The ash still bit. Every mix failed. Tikker's shell drooped. Six spices meant nothing if two could not share a dish. Tikker looked at the soup pot. The cook had left it simmering slow and low. Steam curled off the broth. The smell was soft, rounded, patient. Tikker understood. The spices did not need to meet raw. They needed heat and time between them. Tikker dipped a corner of its shell into the warm broth and stirred in a tiny grain of ash. It waited. Then it added one grain of salt. The broth did not fight. The heat melted the edges off both spices. The bitterness folded in. The sour turned warm. The clash became one deep, slow burn. Tikker worked through the night under the glowing bulbs. It built the blend grain by grain, warming each spice before the next. The ash gave the fire. The salt gave the smoke. Married in heat, they stopped tearing at each other and started building. Tikker tasted the broth and shook with joy. The recipe held. The two fiercest spices now carried the whole blend instead of breaking it. Tikker gathered its spices and returned across the desert to the jazz club. Dallyho threw open the cooler the moment he saw the clam. "You came back! I knew it, I hoped it, I wrote it down just in case —" He lifted the frost-pepper, still cold and firm. Tikker nudged its shell open and showed the six spices inside, then pointed from them to the cooler. Dallyho went still. "All seven. You want to cook. Here. Now." He grabbed a pot. "Then we cook." They set the broth to simmer in the side room. Tikker fed in each spice in order, warming the fierce two first, folding the rest around them. Dallyho tasted and dropped his soda can. The feast rose off the pot in a slow scorching wave. It did not fight itself. Seven rare spices, held apart for so long, finally burned as one. Tikker had built the ultimate scorching feast. Tikker shared the first bowl with Dallyho, who wept into his hat and asked a hundred questions at once. The clam had crossed the whole desert for this. Seven spices found, one blend learned, one feast made real. The frost-pepper stayed with the man who could keep it cold, and the recipe stayed sealed inside Tikker's shell, ready to cook again anywhere the sand led. Tikker crawled low out the door and turned its shell toward the open desert, full and finished at last.
