Chapter 1

Tomas Edel had not spoken a word in three years, but he still kept the warning ready behind his teeth. He watched the tree line every dawn, waiting for proof of the thing that fed there. This morning the proof came. Fresh drag marks scarred the dirt at the forest's edge, deep and wide, ending where the mist swallowed the trunks. He crouched over the marks. Something heavy had been hauled out of the trees and left behind. A boot lay in the churned soil, laces snapped. He did not touch it. The wet ground held every print, but the sun was already burning the mist thin. By full light the trail would dry and vanish. He had until then. Tomas lived alone in a small stone chapel by the road, its walls green with damp, its bell long silent. He ran back for what he needed. Inside, his patrol log lay open on the table, half its lines still blank. He had stopped writing months ago. Words on paper felt as useless as words aloud. He took the leash from its hook. The bloodhound rose from the cold floor, ears dragging, loose skin folding around sad eyes. The dog had tracked lost children through this forest before. It knew the smell of fear better than Tomas knew his own name. He clipped the leash and pulled the door shut. At the tree line the hound dropped its nose to the boot. Its whole body went stiff. Then it strained forward, hauling Tomas into the undergrowth. Branches raked his faded uniform. He let the leash burn through his fist and followed. The trail bent toward a crumbling stone wall, half fallen, moss packed in its cracks. The drag marks led straight to a gap in the stones. The hound stopped there. It would not cross. It backed against Tomas's legs and shook. He stepped through the gap alone. On the far side the ground opened into a shallow pit. Bones lay in it, small and clean, arranged in a rough circle. Not scattered. Placed. In the center sat a child's shoe, dry, older than the fresh boot behind him. Tomas understood then. The thing did not eat what it took. It kept it. It arranged it. And it had been doing so long before he ever came to watch. He pulled a stub of pencil from his pocket. He knelt at the wall and wrote on the stone what he could not say. He drew the circle. He drew the shoe. He needed someone in Duskwood to see this while the marks were still fresh. Behind him the hound howled, one long note. Tomas turned. Fresh drag marks now cut the dirt between him and the gap in the wall. They had not been there when he entered. Something had come in after him.
