Chapter 1

Tony pressed the note against the store window until his fingers turned white. His mother's handwriting was small and neat. "I have to go for a while. Follow the bell, and you'll find me." Gina had left three days ago. Tony wanted her back more than anything, but the note told him nothing about where she went first. He read it again under the red awning of Hooper's Store. The brass bell over the door still swung a little in the wind. Tony looked up at it. Follow the bell. Which bell? Every shop on the block had one. He kicked a pebble across the sidewalk. A trail needed a beginning, and he had no beginning. Then Tony noticed the window display. Behind the glass sat a stack of postcards, propped up beside a little potted plant. Most showed the store itself. But one card, tilted at the front, showed a small brick cottage by a pond. Green ivy climbed its walls. A wooden rocking chair sat by the door. Tony's chest went tight. He knew that cottage. His mother used to talk about it. "That's where I grew up," she had told him once, pointing at an old photo. "Before Sesame Street. Before you." He had never known it was a real place he could find. He went inside. The bell above the door rang. A tired man behind the counter looked up from a newspaper. "That postcard in the window," Tony said. "The cottage by the pond. Where is it?" The man set down his paper. "Pondview," he said. "Folks around here send that one when they miss home." He studied Tony's face. "A woman bought a stack of them. Three days back. Dark hair. Looked like she was in a hurry." Tony's heart pounded. "Gina. That's my mom. Did she say where she was going?" The man scratched his chin. "Said she needed to see the old place one more time. Said the bus stops near the pond." He slid a single postcard across the counter. "She left this one for anybody asking. Guess that's you." Tony turned the card over. On the back, in the same neat handwriting, three words: "Start at Pondview." He held the card with both hands. The blank space where the trail used to be was gone. His mother had left him a first step, and now he had it. Tony pushed the door open. The bell rang behind him. He knew where to go. But the cottage was far, past the edge of the neighborhood, and Tony was one small boy with no way to get there. The trail had a beginning now. It also had a distance he could not walk alone.
