Chapter 5

The sun sank fast. Shadows stretched across the fields. Tony pressed his face to the glass and hunted for one more thing to notice. But the road turned gray, then dim. The billboards blurred. The wind turbines vanished into the dark. "I can't see anything now," Bev said. His engine slowed. "No new facts. You know the deal, small one. I turn around." "Wait!" Tony's mind raced. He couldn't see the road. But he could still think. Facts didn't all come from outside. Some lived inside your own head, waiting. "Bev, why does it get dark at all?" Tony asked. He didn't wait. "The Earth spins like a top. Right now, we're turning away from the sun. It's not the sun leaving us. We're the ones moving." Bev's engine held steady. "Huh. We're the ones moving," he repeated. "And the dark helps you see farther," Tony went on. He pointed up. "Look. Those stars are so far away, some burned out long ago. You're seeing old light. Light that left before you were built." Bev rolled forward again. His headlights cut two bright cones down the road. "Old light," Bev said. "I like that." Tony grinned. The dark wasn't empty. It was full of questions too. He talked about the moon's craters. He talked about why owls hunt at night. He explained how his headlights bounced off the road stripes to guide them home. Each fact bought another mile. The truck climbed and dipped. The stars wheeled overhead. Then Tony saw a soft glow ahead, low to the ground. Water. A pond, flat and shining under the moon. And beside it, a small shape. "Bev, slow down," Tony whispered. A cottage sat by the water. Brick walls wrapped in ivy. A mossy roof. Flower boxes under round windows. A rocking chair waited on the stone step. One lamp burned above the wooden door. Tony's chest went tight. He knew this place. His mother had described it a hundred times. The old cottage by the pond. Her childhood home. "That's it," Tony said. "That's Pondview." Bev pulled to a stop at the edge of the path. His engine idled low. "You made it, small one," he said. "You bought every mile fair." Tony's hand shook on the door handle. He had traded facts across the whole long road. He had beaten the dark. Now the cottage stood right in front of him. He climbed down. The night air smelled of water and flowers. He walked up the stone path toward the glowing door. Then he stopped. The rocking chair still swayed, just a little, as if someone had left it moments ago. But no light moved inside the cottage. No footsteps answered. The one lamp burned over an empty step. Tony had reached the old place. His mother was not here. He stood alone at her door, and now he had to find where she had gone next.
