Chapter 1

Travis watched the stranded man in his mirror and knew he could do nothing. The man sat on a guardrail, holding his arm, blood dripping onto the gravel. Travis braked his transport truck and climbed down. He wanted to help. He always wanted to help. That was the whole reason he drove these foothills roads alone, watching every shoulder for someone in trouble. "You hurt bad?" Travis asked. "Cut it on the fender," the man said. He pressed his sleeve to the wound. The cloth was already soaked. "You got any bandages? Anything?" Travis opened his cab. He dug behind the seat. He found a map, a wrench, an empty coffee cup. No gauze. No tape. No clean cloth. He checked the glovebox and found only napkins. He pulled his own shirt off and tore it into strips. "Here. Hold this tight," Travis said. He wrapped the man's arm. The strips soaked through fast. Travis tied them anyway and told the man to keep pressure on it. A car slowed behind them. The driver rolled down her window. "There's a clinic two turns up," she called. She offered to drive the hurt man there. Travis helped him into her car. The man thanked him. Then the car pulled away, and Travis stood alone on the shoulder with bloody hands and no shirt. He had wanted to do more. He had wanted to clean the cut, close it, send the man off patched and steady. Instead he had torn up a shirt and hoped. It was not enough. Next time it might be worse. Next time someone might need more than cloth strips and luck. Travis drove until he reached a small house with a shingled roof and a warm yellow porch. His aunt lived there. She had nursed hikers and hunters for years. He knocked and told her what happened. She went to her closet and came back with a rugged metal case. A red cross marked the front. The paint was scratched from years of hard use. "My old road kit," she said. "Take it." Travis opened it on her porch steps. Inside sat gauze rolls, medical tape, antiseptic, scissors, bandages, and a splint. Everything he had needed an hour ago. He checked each item and learned what it was for. His aunt showed him how to clean a wound and wrap it right. "Keep it stocked," she said. "Replace what you use." Travis carried the case to his truck and set it behind the seat, where he could reach it fast. He started the engine and pulled back onto the road. Now he watched the shoulders again. This time, when he found someone bleeding, he would be ready. But a full kit meant new weight to carry. And soon the road would test whether he knew how to use what was inside it.
