Tuffy walked the eastern paths the next morning, checking the homes near the oak groves. The fox had gone to help his father search for the suspect named in the journal. Tuffy had chosen to do what he always did — make sure everyone was safe. He found the family's home just past the third bend. A massive tree lay across the clearing, its roots torn from the earth. Branches snapped like broken bones jutted into the air. The den beneath it had collapsed completely. Tuffy's breath caught. He called out, hoping no one had been inside when the wind came. A voice answered from the trees behind him. We're here. We're safe. A mother raccoon emerged with three kits, their faces tired but unhurt. They'd been in the western groves when it happened, she said. Tuffy felt relief flood through him, then noticed what sat on a flat stone near the ruined den. A food bowl filled with dried kibble rested there, untouched. Beside it, lily pads floated in a small pool with candle stubs burned down to nothing. The mother raccoon followed his gaze. We've been waiting for you, she said quietly. We knew you'd come check on us. Tuffy stared at the bowl, at the candles burned through long nights of waiting. They had trusted he would arrive. Not hoped — trusted. The weight he always carried shifted inside him. He hadn't failed them by being slow. They had simply known he was coming, and that had been enough to keep them safe until he did. He helped them gather what they could salvage from the wreckage. When they left for a cousin's home deeper in the forest, the mother raccoon touched his shoulder. Thank you for coming, she said. We knew you would. Tuffy watched them go, feeling something he couldn't name. Someone had waited for him. Someone had known he would come. The forest paths ahead looked different now — not longer, but less lonely.
