Chapter 6

Tyler crossed out of the burned district on foot. He kept the borrowed scarf high and his bangs low. Four blocks became eight. The streets widened into an industrial strip where a long steam-tracked hauler sat parked along the curb, its riveted plates ticking as they cooled. Past the hauler, a flat river ran between low banks. He needed a courier to carry the next lie — a whisper to the middle faction that Rashid's group had taken the cardinal for themselves. Two rumors, three factions, one war. But Rashid had heard him speak. Rashid was passing his voice around like a coin. The next courier Tyler stopped could be one of Rashid's. He watched the crosswalk at the end of the block. A one-eyed umbrella on a single leg hopped across the painted lines, kimono dragging, half a paper seal pinched in its hand. It stopped in the middle of the road and turned its eye on him. "You looked at me twice," the umbrella said. "Most people look once." "I need a message carried," Tyler said. He kept his voice thin, not his own. "Paid." "Not a courier. Looking for a hand that broke this." It lifted the torn seal. "But I hear things. Trade." Before Tyler could answer, boots hit the pavement behind him. He turned slow. A short hunter in a blue cap crossed the parking lot at the corner, cricket bat wrapped in bandaging held low along his leg. Honey hair under the brim. Lucas Axton — Tyler had seen the cap at the market weeks back and asked around. Seven years hunting. Not Rashid's faction. Not Angello's. A fourth blade, working alone. Lucas stopped ten feet off. His eyes stayed under the cap. "Say something," he said. Tyler said nothing. "Rashid's asking after a voice," Lucas said. "Soft. Careful. Won't give a name. Says the throat catches on the S." Tyler's throat caught. He did not speak. Lucas watched him a long second. Then he looked at the umbrella. "You. Did he hire you?" "He tried," the umbrella said. "I said no." Lucas nodded once. He turned his cap toward Tyler. "I don't work with Rashid. I don't hand men to Rashid." He tapped the bat against his boot. "But I remember faces. Move." Tyler moved. He walked past the hauler, past the river bank, and did not look back until he heard Lucas's boots go the other way. The umbrella hopped after him. "You can't speak to hunters anymore. Rashid gave your throat to every ear he owns." "I know," Tyler said. His voice was a scrape now. He had lost the courier route. He had lost speech as a tool. Whatever came next, he would have to plant it with paper, or with a mouth that was not his."", "characters_mentioned": ["Kasa Karakuri", "Lucas Axton
