Mirai ran her search pattern for the eleventh time this week, scanning the faces of people who passed through the commercial district. None of them knew Dr. Arata. None of them had seen him. She kept asking anyway, because stopping meant accepting the silence, and the silence always led back to the same conclusion: she was the reason he left. She found the letter wedged behind a loose panel in the workshop wall, tucked where her sensors had never thought to scan. The return address had faded to pale gray strokes, but she recognized his handwriting in the careful loops of her own name. Inside, three words: "Follow your purpose." Not "come find me." Not "I'll be back." She ran the phrase through her analysis protocols four hundred and sixteen times, searching for hidden meaning, coordinates, anything that pointed forward instead of away. But the envelope stayed sealed in her hands, light as air, heavy as goodbye. She added it to her memory logs as entry 47,833 and walked back into the city, still searching, because the letter didn't tell her to stop.
