Chapter 1

Valentinian raised his cup and let the wine spill over the rim, watching it stain the marble beneath his feet. The baths echoed with laughter from the men around him — his men, paid with coins he no longer had. He drank deep and smiled at nothing, because somewhere in the palace his mother sat with the generals and held the keys to the treasury he would never touch unless he took them. One of his men leaned close, asking about next month's pay. Valentinian clapped him on the shoulder and promised silk and gold, then turned away before the lie showed on his face. The water rippled as another man dove in, splashing wine-dark drops across the columns. When the funds ran dry, they would leave. But he would not wait for his mother to die or beg her for scraps. He would find another way to break her grip on what was his — a way that required neither patience nor permission. But the thought died as a messenger arrived at the bath's edge, boots wet from rushing through the palace. The man bowed and spoke the words Valentinian had heard a hundred times before: his mother requested his presence in the throne room. The laughter around him quieted. His men watched to see if their emperor would go when summoned like a child called to dinner. Valentinian set down his cup and stood, water running off his skin. He would go. He would sit through another lecture about duty and bloodline and his father's memory. And then he would return here and start spending money he did not have, because the only thing worse than her control was letting her see that it mattered. He walked the marble halls barefoot, leaving wet prints that disappeared behind him. The throne room doors stood open. Inside, his mother sat draped in red silk, two generals standing beside her like guards. She looked up when he entered, and her mouth curved in something too cold to be a smile. One of the generals held a scroll stamped with military seals. They had been discussing troop movements, supply chains, matters of empire that should have required his seal. His mother raised one finger and the generals stepped back. She told him to sit. Valentinian remained standing, water still dripping from his skin, and watched her decide whether to make this a fight. She did not. Instead she dismissed him with a nod, as if he had already lost before speaking a word. He turned and left, knowing exactly what he would do next — find money somewhere else, because begging was not an option and waiting was a kind of death.
