Inside the saloon, the air smells like burnt sugar and metal. Varion pours himself a drink but doesn't lift the glass. His crew will be talking by now. They always do when something breaks the routine. He built this place to feel safe, but tonight it feels like another cage. Footsteps approach from behind. Varion doesn't turn. The man who enters wears neon green tactical gear and a mask that looks like a grinning skull. No name, no questions asked — that's the arrangement. Varion hired him six months ago to handle the difficult shipments, the ones that scream or beg. The ones Varion stopped looking at years ago. The man in the mask never reports details, just confirms delivery or disposal. Varion pays extra for that distance. But tonight the masked figure stands there waiting, and Varion realizes he's being asked to make a decision about the woman in the container. His hand tightens on the glass. He could nod. One simple gesture and she disappears into the system he built, handled by someone else, forgotten by morning. The mask stares at him with painted teeth. Varion opens his mouth to give the order, but his throat closes. The woman's eyes flash in his memory — that look that didn't beg. He sets down the glass and hears himself say the words he's never said before: "Leave her. I'll handle this one myself." The masked man tilts his head, then walks out without a word. Varion sits alone in the silence, knowing his crew will hear about this by sunrise, knowing the whispers will get louder, knowing he just made himself weaker. But for the first time in years, the quiet inside him feels like something other than death.
