Chapter 1

Vela wanted one thing: to copy the legendary tome no apprentice had ever finished, and earn the title of full scribe. But the head scribe wouldn't let her within ten feet of it. The old woman kept the tome locked behind glass, its pages so brittle a careless breath could crack them. "You spill more ink than you spread," she told Vela. "Prove you can finish what you start." That was the problem. Vela started spells she couldn't finish. Half-cast words leaked from her fingers all day. Scrolls slid from her arms and unrolled across the floor. When she tried to summon light for reading, she got sparks and smoke instead. The head scribe watched every mess with a thin, tired frown. So Vela asked for a real task. The head scribe handed her a copy job for the market square. "Copy the notice board list. Every stall, every price. One error, and you clean brushes for a year." Vela carried her ink and paper to the square before the stalls opened. Worn paving stones spread around a stone fountain. Striped awnings hung over empty tables. Beside the board stood a weathered signpost, its wood stained dark with old ink, vines climbing one side. She set her paper against it and began. Her hand shook. A spell tugged at her fingers, wanting to finish itself. She breathed slow and let it die. She copied each stall name in careful strokes. Apples. Cloth. Bread. She checked every price twice against the board. Then a shadow crossed the page. Vela looked up. A pink unicorn with folded wings stood at the fountain, drinking. Its mane glowed faint in the morning gray. Merchants froze at their stalls. The creature lifted its head and looked straight at Vela. Her old habit fired. A spell jumped from her hand before she could stop it — a thread of light, reaching toward the unicorn. Her paper slipped. The ink pot tipped. In one blink she saw a year of ruin. But this time Vela did not panic. She snapped her free hand shut and spoke the closing word she never remembered. The light thread coiled back into her palm and vanished. She caught the ink pot before it spilled. She caught the paper against the signpost. Nothing was lost. The unicorn dipped its head, spread its wings, and rose over the awnings. Vela finished the last line with a steady hand. She brought the list back that afternoon. The head scribe read every entry. She checked each price. She found no error, not one. For a long moment she said nothing. "You finished it," the head scribe said at last. She pulled a brass key from her belt and set it on the desk. "The tome is yours to copy. But understand this — no apprentice has ever reached the final page. Most give up by the seventh." Vela picked up the key. Her hand did not shake.
