Chapter 13

The reply hung in the air. Her handlers wanted her in person, tonight, to close the file. Vela knew the ritual. They would ask for proof of love. Not a report. Not a sworn log. A token she carried by choice, something that meant she stayed for the king and not the mission. She searched herself and found nothing that fit. Every object she owned tied her to the job. She walked to the Glowing Spore Market, its capped roofs pulsing soft blue in the dark. Captain Pluto came with her, his uniform buttons catching the spore light. Sun Wukong Azure trailed behind, tail flicking, still buzzing from the hunt. Vela stopped at a wooden rack hung with folded cloth and open crates of fruit. She picked up a striped blanket, then a jar of dried spores. Both felt hollow in her hands. "These are just things," she said. "My handlers know a bribe when they see one. A gift proves I want the mission to end. It proves nothing about my heart." Pluto studied the rack. "Then don't bring a thing you bought. Bring a thing that was chosen for you." Vela's jaw tightened. She had nothing like that. Sun Wukong grabbed a mango, sniffed it, and slammed it down. His grin dropped to a scowl. "Wrong place," he snapped. Then his face lit again. "The armor room. Follow." He bounded off before she could ask. He led her to a display near the castle's inner hall. A rack of blades stood polished under a suit of empty armor, weapons hung in neat rows by their colored grips. Vela's chest went cold. This was Lysander's. His practice steel. His spare guard. On a lower peg hung a small thing that did not belong with the weapons. A cord, and on it a single dull moth-wing charm. She knew it at once. The king had carried a hurt moth once, in his tower, the night he first took her hand. He had kept a wing when it healed. He had strung it and left it here, in the room where his right hand trained, where he thought no spy would look. He had meant it for her. Lysander had told her once the king left small gifts he could not say aloud. Vela lifted the charm off the peg. It weighed nothing. It weighed everything. She had not bought it. She had not been ordered to take it. Benbenek had made it and hidden it, hoping she would find it herself. "This," she said. "This proves the bond is real." Pluto nodded slowly. "That one they can't call a bribe." Vela closed her fist around the wing. Now she had her token. But holding it, she understood the cost. To show her handlers the king's true love, she had to carry the king's most secret gift straight into the hands of the people who could still erase her. One night left, and the proof of her heart was now bait.
