Chapter 2

The dinner ended with no answers. Vela sat alone in a cold guest room, turning the problem over. They had won a seat at the king's table, but not his trust. To reach his heart, they needed to know it. What did Benbenek love? What did he fear? Vela knew nothing. Any gift, any word, would land like another stranger's trick. They needed someone who already lived inside the king's walls. At dawn, Vela found such a person in the courtyard. A gray-haired warrior stood by the practice posts, swinging a wooden blade in slow, patient arcs. His armor bore a red heart on the chest. He was not a mushroom-folk. Like Vela, he had no cap, no spores. An outsider. And yet the guards nodded to him as one of their own. "You're the new stranger," the warrior said, not stopping his swing. "The king watches you. He watches me too. He just forgot he's doing it." Vela stepped closer. "You live here. He trusts you." "He adopted me." The warrior lowered the blade. "Lysander. And no, he doesn't trust me. He loves me. Different thing." His voice went quiet. "Love makes people stop asking questions. That's the only safe place there is." Vela heard the fear under the words. This man was hiding something. So was Vela. They recognized each other the way two liars do, fast and without proof. "I need to understand him," Vela said. "What he loves. What frightens him. Right now I'm blind. Every move I make looks like a threat." Lysander studied them. "Why should I help you?" "Because you're tired of performing." Vela held his gaze. "I saw it the moment you spoke. You want one person you don't have to lie to." Lysander went still. The wooden blade hung at his side. For a long moment he said nothing. Then he set the blade against the post. "He fears the glowing globe," Lysander said. "He holds it every night. It shows him strangers who came before. People who broke the harmony. He lost a friend to one of them, years back. That's why he tests everyone twice." Lysander paused. "And he loves the old rocket that brought him here as a boy. It sits in the east yard. It still talks. He thinks no one knows he visits it." Vela's chest lightened. This was the map they needed. Not flattery. Not tricks. Real fear, real love, the two doors into a guarded heart. "Thank you," Vela said. "Don't thank me yet." Lysander picked up his blade again. "He'll test you soon. He already suspects. If you fail, he won't just doubt you. He'll doubt me for talking to you." Vela walked back inside knowing the king at last. But now they carried Lysander's secret beside their own. Two lies leaned on one truth. If Vela stumbled, they both fell.
