Chapter 4
The king's footsteps stopped short of the rocket. Vela crouched behind the fins with Lysander, breath held. King Benbenek had not spoken. Then a new sound cut the yard — boots scraping stone from the far wall. Vela peered out. A stranger climbed over, gray hair wild, a long sword shining in his hand. Its blade glowed pink and purple, like glass filled with fire.
The king turned toward the intruder. "You," Benbenek said. His voice shook. Vela understood at once. This was no palace guard. This was the thing the king feared most — an outsider with a weapon, come to break the harmony.
The stranger raised his sword. "I've come for your right hand, Benbenek. Your kingdom protects itself with lies. I'll cut through them." He advanced, boots crunching. The king backed against the rocket, unarmed, alone in his secret place.
Vela saw the whole trap. If she stayed hidden, the king might die. If she stepped out, she revealed herself standing where no stranger should stand. Either way, her cover cracked. But a dead king could not be won. She chose.
Vela sprang from behind the fins. She grabbed a loose iron bar from the rocket's old scaffold and swung it hard. The glowing sword met the bar with a crack of sparks. The stranger stumbled. "Another outsider," he spat. "You defend him?"
"Run, my king," Vela said. She did not look back. She swung again, driving the man toward the wall. Lysander burst out too, blade drawn, and pinned the stranger between them. Together they forced him back over the stones. He dropped from the wall and fled into the dark forest, sword still glowing.
Silence. Vela turned, iron bar in hand, and faced the king. Now he would see her plainly. A stranger, in his hidden place, at his hidden hour. She braced for his accusation.
King Benbenek stared at her. His hands trembled. "You struck him for me," he said slowly. "You stood between his blade and my heart." He looked at the rocket, then at Vela, then at Lysander. "I found two outsiders in my secret place. I meant to name you spies." He stopped. "But a spy would have let me fall."
Vela lowered the bar. Her hands ached. "I came only to know you," she said. It was true enough to hold.
The king reached out and touched her shoulder. "Come inside," he said. "You've earned a place at my table, not under my watch." He walked ahead toward the castle, calmer now, trusting.
Lysander caught Vela's eye and let out a breath. The alliance had survived. More than survived — it had bought her a seat beside the king himself. But the stranger with the glowing sword had fled, not fallen. He knew her face now. And he would come back for both of them.
