Chapter 9

Vela sat beside Benbenek that night, but the closeness felt thin. He held her hand and called her his equal. Still, he did not know her real face. The one she wore now was a mask her handlers had built. Three nights remained. She saw the truth plain. He could not love a woman who was all costume. If she kept hiding, his heart would stay half-open forever. She left the castle before dawn and went to her hideaway. The shuttered walls kept her secrets out of sight. Inside, her floating bed drifted in the dark. Her rocket watched her from the corner with its painted grin. "You're going to show him," it said. "That's a big risk." Vela pressed the panel at her collar. "He deserves the risk," she said. The mask peeled away. Her true skin glowed faint silver. Her real eyes were wide and strange. She looked like nothing born under any sun he knew. A scaled cat slipped under the shutter. It carried a folded note. Vela read it. Benbenek asked her to meet him at the old rocket in the east yard. She followed the cat out. But first she called someone she almost forgot. A woman named Maya Reeves waited near the market that morning, a stranger from a small planet called Earth. Maya had crossed the sky alone, hunting a life worth keeping. "You really gonna let him see the whole you?" Maya asked, so soft it barely carried. "I flew off from everybody I loved. Don't waste a person who wants to stay." Her words pushed Vela the last step. Benbenek stood by his old rocket when a glowing petal pod drifted down and landed near the flat stones. It opened like a flower and set Vela on the ground, no mask, silver skin bare in the dark. Benbenek stared. His hand went to his globe out of old fear. Then it dropped. "That's you," he whispered. "The real you." Vela did not run. "This is what I hid," she said. "No paint. No lie. If you can't want this, then you never wanted me." He crossed the stones and touched her cheek. Her true skin, not the mask. "I've hidden behind a crown my whole life," he said. "You just walked out from behind everything." He pulled her close. This time his walls did not seal shut. They fell. He kissed her, and it was hers, given to her real face. Vela's chest ached with something rare. She had shown him all of it and he had stayed. His heart was hers now, no longer at arm's length. But joy did not last. Over his shoulder, past the pod's glow, she saw metal shine in the trees. A blade. Someone had watched the whole thing. Someone who knew her face and wanted the king's right hand. Two nights left, and now Benbenek's love made him a target.
