Chapter 4

Velvet sat at the brass table with the black notebook open. Rain streaked the lounge windows. The council had already read the shape of her plan through three separate hands. That meant the plan itself was the leak. A plan they could name was a plan they could trap. So she would change one line and tell no one. She found the entry for the canal meeting. She drew a clean stroke through it before the ink had time to set. Under the crossed line, she wrote a new place. A covered dock two districts over, above the fish market, at the same hour. She did not send a runner. She did not tap a glass. She closed the notebook and pressed her palm flat on the cover. She counted the ripples. Zira would walk to the canal at the given hour and find no body to move. The water would tell her before Velvet did. Omaha would carry the serving tray into the private dining room and find the auditor's chair empty. The house steward would say the booking had shifted. Inferno would feel the change the moment the auditor's carriage turned north instead of east. Three surprises, three separate reactions, three tremors the council could not stitch into one rumor. Omaha came up the stair first, tray under her arm from a shift she had not worked yet. "Sweetheart. The steward changed the room." Her tail flicked once. "You want to tell me why I heard it from him and not you?" Velvet poured her a short glass. "Because if I had told you, someone would have read it on your face before the door opened." Omaha took the glass. She did not smile. "Careful. Cats remember everything." "I know," Velvet said. "I am counting on it." Zira arrived wet, though the rain had stopped an hour ago. She stood at the rail and did not turn. "The canal was empty." "Yes." "You moved him." "I moved the meeting." Zira was quiet a long moment. "Next time. Tell the water." "Next time there will not be a next time," Velvet said. Zira's shoulders eased a fraction. That was as close to agreement as the sea gave. Inferno came last, laughing before she reached the top step. Smoke curled at her horns. "He turned north, darling. I nearly followed the wrong carriage. You almost cost me a night's work." "I almost cost the council a week's work," Velvet said. Inferno's yellow eyes settled on her. "Obsession is just worship with worse manners. I like this version of you better." She dropped into the velvet seat and stole the auditor's napkin from the table, folding it smaller. Velvet opened the notebook again. Beside the crossed line she drew a small arrow, pointing nowhere the council could follow. The plan was alive now. A living plan could not be guessed. Only chased. And chasing was the one thing that always left tracks.
