Chapter 2

The wet ash was still cooling on the vault floor when Venomcodex heard the second sound. Not the low hum of the working cipher. A thin whine, high and wrong, coming out of the open channels above the shelves. The wound in the code was leaking. Fragments of raw knowledge were bleeding into the public streams, the ones any passing mind could brush against. Venomcodex had seen this before, a long time ago, and people had died from less. Venomcodex slid to the central console. Green symbols crawled across the black walls of the library, faster than they should. One fragment had already surfaced in a distant reader's feed. Venomcodex could feel the reader's pulse skip through the link. Minutes, not hours. Void had left with Mary. Chao DeVoid was gone. There was no one to hold the door this time. Venomcodex opened the cage in the lowest shelf. Inside coiled a knot of mirrored necks and echoing heads, each one a copy of the next, all of them serpents. Venomcodex had built the hydra years ago and never used it. It was made to hunt loose data. Every head could chase a different fragment through the channels at once. "Find them," Venomcodex said. "Every piece. Swallow, don't read." The heads lifted, tongues flicking, and poured into the open streams like ink into water. The hydra worked fast. One head caught a fragment mid-broadcast and closed on it. Another chased a line of corrupted text through a sleeping mind and pulled it back before the sleeper woke. Head after head returned with data clamped in its teeth. Venomcodex tracked them from the console. Six fragments. Ten. Fourteen. The whine in the channel started to drop. But one reader had already been touched. Venomcodex felt the person's thoughts stuttering through the link, forming words that should not exist in any living head. The hydra could not un-know what a mind had learned. Venomcodex took the amulet from around its own neck. Tight rings of cipher-marks. It had made the amulet for exactly this, and never wanted to use it. Venomcodex pressed the amulet against the link and turned the outer ring. The carved symbols lit and began to scrub. The reader's borrowed knowledge came apart, letter by letter, and drained into the amulet's core. The reader would keep the fear, but not the words. That was the trade. Venomcodex held the ring until the link went quiet. The hum returned. Still off by one note, still wounded, but sealed at the edges. The hydra came home one head at a time and coiled back into its cage. Venomcodex hung the amulet on the console, heavy now with what it had eaten. The leak was closed. But every fragment the hydra swallowed was still inside it, alive, waiting to be sorted. Venomcodex now had a second vault to guard, and this one could move.
