Chapter 4
The green mirror was dead glass now. Venomcodex carried the amulet of swallowed fragments and no place to scribe them. Every surface in the library still reflected, and reflection carried the flaw. It needed something that copied nothing. It knew one maker who worked in a material that drank light instead of throwing it back. So it followed the data streams out of the vault and into the ridge, where a black cave opened in the rock.
Inside, a small hooded figure stood at a forge of polished black stone. Molten seams ran through the stone like veins. Gotim did not look up. His yellow eyes stayed on the flame. Venomcodex had heard of him from the others. He shaped darkness into tools. He judged who was ready to hold them. The stillness in the cave felt heavier than any threat.
"You want obsidian," Gotim said. Not a question.
"I need a surface that cannot reflect," Venomcodex said. "Every mirror in my library copies a flaw I cut into my own code. The corruption spreads by reflection. I have to scribe a living cipher on something that copies nothing."
Gotim lifted a jagged black stone from beside the forge. He turned it once. Its surface was rough, dull, no shine at all. "Obsidian remembers," he said. "It does not repeat. A polished face throws your image back. A broken face keeps it inside." He set the stone down. "You cut your own filter. Why."
"A hunger entity was tunneling toward files that killed people once," Venomcodex said. "I ruined my cipher to stop it. Now I have no clean place to build again."
Gotim watched the guardian for a long moment. He was measuring, not deciding fast. "You broke your own work to protect others," he said. "That is the correct use. I will forge you a surface."
He fed the rough stone into the flame. He worked slow, no wasted motion. He did not polish it. He kept the face jagged, matte, hungry for light. When he lifted it out, the black stone gave back nothing, only depth.
Venomcodex laid a test cipher-layer across the rough surface. It waited for the whine, the second wrong tone that had spread through every mirror. The layer settled. One note rose, low and steady. Only one. Load-bearing and clean. The corruption had nothing to copy.
"It holds," Venomcodex said.
"It holds because it hides," Gotim said. He handed over the slab. "A surface that keeps everything inside keeps your flaw inside too. Scribe your cipher here, and no one reads it by looking. Not even you. Remember that."
Venomcodex took the black slab. For the first time it had a clean, uncopying surface for the living cipher. But Gotim's warning stayed. The obsidian would hide the pattern from everyone, including its maker. To decode it later, Venomcodex would need a key it did not yet possess.
