Chapter 1

Vesper Brynn held the marriage contract and read the groom's name for the third time. Her father had chosen a lord from the eastern hills, a man she had met twice. The wedding was set for midsummer. She set the parchment down and thought of the commoner who made her forget her own titles. She wanted to marry him instead, with her court cheering the match. But a noblewoman could not simply call a tradesman to her rooms. She needed proof he loved her before she spent her name on him. She found Dara Kell in the forge, hammering a plow blade twice as hard as the iron needed. Dara was her oldest friend, a blacksmith with a half-shaved head and a scar across her collarbone where a bond-mark had been broken and never hidden. Dara set down her hammer when she saw Vesper's face. "You've got that look," Dara said. "The contract came." "Midsummer," Vesper said. "I need an honest reason to see him. Not a stolen moment. Something my court would accept." Dara wiped her hands on her apron. "Then give him work. The great hall needs new door hinges. Commission them. Any lady can summon a craftsman." Vesper almost laughed at how simple it was. A commission was duty, not scandal. No one could whisper about it. She could watch his face, measure his words, and learn what she needed before she risked everything. She sent the order that afternoon. The next morning James Knight stood in the hall, measuring the great doors with a knotted cord. His brown hair was tied back, his beard dark against his jaw. He did not meet her eyes at first. "The hinges," Vesper said, keeping her voice flat and royal. "I want them finished before the midsummer feast." He looked up then. His cheeks colored. "For your wedding, my lady?" The word hung between them. She watched him grip the cord too tight. He was not supposed to know the date. The whole manor must have been talking. "Yes," she said. He stared at the door, then at her. "I'll make them strong," he said. "Strong enough to last after you've gone to your lord." His voice broke on the last word, and he looked away fast, as if he'd said too much. That crack told her everything. He loved her. He thought he'd already lost. He would pour that ache into iron and say nothing more, because he was a commoner and she was promised. Vesper's heart answered before her mind could stop it. She had her proof now. But it came with a clock. The hinges would be done in weeks. The wedding waited in midsummer. She could no longer wonder whether he loved her. She had to decide whether she would fight for him, and how to make a court that had already chosen a lord choose a blacksmith's apprentice instead.
