Chapter 1

Vesper Thistlewhisk scattered three laughter seeds across the grass and waited for them to bloom. They did. But not where he planted them. The flowers opened in a line ten paces ahead, each one appearing where the previous should have been. He planted three more. They bloomed further along the same invisible path. He followed the trail. Each flower stood twice as tall as the last, petals made of shimmering bubbles that caught the light. Their centers glowed warm like candy left in the sun. Tiny winged creatures circled them, laughing in high silver voices. The line stretched toward a hill he hadn't noticed before. Vesper stopped planting seeds. Something was pulling them toward a place he hadn't chosen. He picked up his bag and walked after the flowers, leaving his bubble kit tucked away. For once, he wasn't leading. The very first seed he'd planted that morning bloomed at his feet now, hours late. It was star-shaped and glowed gold and pink like a falling star frozen mid-fall. He knelt beside it. The flower pulsed once, then pointed a single petal toward the hill. Vesper understood then that the trail wasn't random. Something at the hill's top wanted him there. Not his bubbles. Not his performance. Just him. He stood and followed the line of flowers, hands empty, toward a destination he hadn't earned and didn't yet trust. At the hill's crest stood a building that looked like it had been spun from blue and orange sugar clouds. The walls curved and twisted upward, bright as festival food, ending in peaks that caught the afternoon light. A door waited at the center, solid and real beneath all that color. The last flower in the trail bloomed directly on the welcome mat. Vesper stopped three steps away. The building sat quiet, not demanding anything. He could walk closer or turn back. But the seeds had pulled him here without his permission, and now his feet wouldn't move in either direction.
