Chapter 1
The floor tilted, and Vespera grabbed the workbench before her tea slid off it. A temporal storm had ripped through Aetheria-9, and now her loft was moving. She lived alone in this tower of brass and quartz, high above the sky-islands, trying to turn it into a home that could ride out storms like this one. Instead, the storm was winning. The mooring anchors that chained the loft to its basalt spire had torn loose. She felt it through the runic lines in her arms, cold data flooding her skin. The whole structure was drifting toward open sky.
She ran to the anchor console. Three of four cables hung dead. The last one groaned, fraying. If it snapped, the loft would float free and the storm would tear it apart. She had rebuilt this place from nothing after the power grid failed three times in a week. She would not watch it break now.
Vespera pried open the floor panel and studied the anchor drive. The winch motor needed power, and the storm had starved it. She needed a clean, steady surge, and she had nothing that would hold steady in this chaos.
A soft chirp sounded behind her. The little fox spirit crept from under the second workbench, the wide one she still kept though its owner was long gone. Three amber flames trembled on its tails. Brass rings clicked along its fur as it pressed close to a shelf and pawed at a device stored there. An hourglass frame of brass and mahogany, its spiral crystal glowing.
"You're right," Vespera said. "That thing bends time. Steady is exactly what it does." The fox flicked its tails and blinked its glowing eye at her, as if it had known all along.
She hauled the hourglass device to the floor panel. Her hands moved fast, splicing its output into the dead winch motor. The crystal core could hold a moment still. If she looped that stillness into the motor, the surge would stay smooth even as the storm bucked around her.
The last cable screamed. Vespera slammed the coupling home and fed the device's power into the drive. The crystal flared. Time slowed inside the winch, and the motor turned with perfect, patient force. One by one, the drums reeled the loose anchors back. Cables bit into the spire. The floor steadied under her boots.
Vespera sat back, breathing hard. The loft held. But the hourglass device now hummed inside her anchor system, fused into it, and its crystal had dimmed to half its glow. She had spent something she did not fully understand to save her home.
The fox curled against her leg. On her forearm, a new warning pulsed. The device's core was draining fast, and it was the only thing holding her anchors true. She had bought her sanctuary a night. She had not learned yet what it would cost by morning.
