Chapter 1

Victor was two hundred years old, and tonight he nearly lost everything in a single wet smear. His hand shook. The cup tipped. Water spread across the table toward a stack of loose pages—pages the tyrant's enforcers would kill him for. He lunged with his cane and swept the stack to the floor. Three sheets soaked through anyway. The ink ran. Decades of forbidden knowledge, blurred in one careless moment. He sat down hard on the floor, breathing fast. For two centuries he had hoarded these pages. He kept the only copies of truths the tyrant burned. He had no student yet, no one to carry them on when he died. But that meant nothing if the pages rotted in loose piles. A flood, a fire, a single raid, and his life's work would vanish. He needed a safe place to store it all. He needed it tonight. He pulled two things from under his bed. The first was a worn vintage suitcase, scuffed from old travels. He pressed the base and the false bottom lifted. The hollow beneath could hold the whole archive, disguised as an old man's junk. The second was a sturdy satchel with a heavy, reinforced shell. He had sewn lead into its lining years ago, for one purpose—to shield the most critical pages against anything. Victor worked through the night. He sorted the pages by their worth. The common notes, the copied histories, he packed flat into the suitcase and snapped the false floor shut over them. If enforcers searched his room, they would see rags and a tired traveler. The twelve pages that mattered most—the ones that named names, the ones that could topple a throne—he rolled tight and slid into the lead-lined satchel. He buckled the straps. He looped the strap over his hunched shoulder. He tested it. He stood with the cane, the satchel against his hip, the suitcase gripped in his free hand. For the first time in years, the knowledge traveled with him instead of waiting to be found. No spill could reach it now. No raid could catch it all in one place. He let out a slow breath. Then a thought struck him, and his relief drained away. He could guard the pages. He could not read them forever. His eyes already failed him. His hands already shook. A safe box does not teach. He had solved the smaller problem and sharpened the larger one. The archive was secure, but it was a tomb without a living mind to inherit it. Victor looked at the satchel on his hip. Somewhere out there was a person worthy of it. He had to find that person before his own time ran out. At dawn he fastened his sandals, took up his cane, and stepped out to search for an heir.
