Chapter 32

Shen's warning followed Vincent down the mountain. The enemy would strike the old master first, to unmake the lesson before it held. But Vincent could not guard two places at once. His husband needed him at home. The master needed him on the peak. One body could not stand both posts. So Vincent made a choice. He would defend Shen himself and trust the wards to hold his husband. He left his husband inside the warded house with the koi pond and the gardens, the guardian beast at the door. "Stay behind the runes," Vincent said. "Hear the whisper. Don't open the door." His husband nodded. He was steadier now. That steadiness let Vincent turn and go. Vincent could not fight a mind-attack alone. His own mind had no training. So he called on a protector he had heard named only in old stories. It came at dusk, tall and pale, faceless, robed in white and blue. This was Sentinel Luminos, guardian of humankind, neither beast nor man. It could destroy anything it looked upon. Vincent knelt before it. "An old man taught my husband to resist a curse of doubt," Vincent said. "The enemy comes to silence him tonight. I cannot shield a mind. You can burn what I cannot touch." The Sentinel said nothing. Its white eyes turned toward the mountain. It walked, and Vincent followed. They reached Shen's hut as the cold came down. Shen sat with his eyes closed, hands folded, as if nothing hunted him. "You brought the Sentinel," he said. "Good. The attack is not a sword. It comes as a voice in the dark." It came near midnight. The air thickened. Vincent felt nothing where his dread used to live, but he saw Shen stiffen. The old man's lips moved, naming the doubt, letting it pass. A shape gathered at the edge of the room, black and whispering. It reached for Shen's mind. The Sentinel turned its head. Its gaze fell on the shape. White light poured from its eyes. The black thing shrieked and came apart, unmade in an instant. The whispering stopped. The room went still. Shen opened his eyes. He breathed slow and even. "It struck. It failed," he said. "The lesson holds. Your husband is safe now. The seam did not tear." Vincent's shoulders dropped. He had protected both posts after all. But the Sentinel turned its white gaze on him, and Vincent felt it weigh him like a judge. "That thing was sent by a hand," the Sentinel said. Its voice was flat and vast. "I unmade the weapon. I did not unmake the one who threw it. It knows now that I guard you. It will not send whispers again. It will come itself." Vincent stood in the quiet hut. He had saved the master and shielded his husband's heart. But he had drawn the hidden enemy into the open, and next time it would come in person.
