Chapter 1

Vincent Nightwhisper stopped at the carved post where Thorn Vale's wards began. The runes on the wood pulsed a slow yellow against his boots. He had counted the steps from his own gates to this place: nine thousand, four hundred, and twelve. He had counted because counting kept his hands steady. In six nights the high fae would gather for the solstice, and the night fae would bind their mates. He meant to walk back through these woods with Thorn at his side. He had wanted her for years, ever since she had told him staring was rude and walked away in fourteen even steps. The problem was his name. High fae spoke it the way they spoke of frost on the orchards. Cold lord. Vicious lord. The lord who did not laugh at the winter court. He had earned every word of it, and he had never cared until now. Thorn lived alone in the forest and answered to no one. She would hear Nightwhisper and shut the door. He knew this the way he knew the count of his own steps. So he had sent the letter ahead. A folded parchment, sealed in dark red wax with his mark pressed clean into the center. He had written it six times before he stopped crossing things out. In the end he wrote only that he was coming, that he came without guards, and that he wished to be useful to her work in the woods. He signed his full name. He did not soften it. He carried the second gift in his hand. A small cloth bag, drawn tight at the neck, glowing faintly through the weave. Faestones, the kind set around trap sites to warn animals off the wire. He had bought every bag a southern trader would sell him. The poacher lord who hunted Thorn's forest laid traps faster than one woman could break them. Vincent could not give her his name back clean. He could give her stones. The cabin sat in a clearing, moss thick along its log walls, a map table visible through the front window. The door opened before he reached the steps. Thorn stood in the gap with a knife low against her thigh. Her hood was down. She had read the letter; he could see the broken wax on the table behind her. "Nightwhisper," she said. Flat. Not a question. "I brought stones for the snares." He held the bag out at arm's length. "I'll set them where you say. Then I'll go, if you want." She looked at the bag. She looked at his face. She did not lower the knife. "You can come to the table," she said. "Not past it." She stepped back into the cabin and left the door open behind her. Vincent counted his breath once and went in. He had bought a foot of ground inside her walls. He did not yet know what it would cost him to keep it.
