Six months of studying this woman's patterns, her tastes, her blind spots — and now she's made a mistake in public. The black notebook with gold trim sits open on the passenger seat of her car. She's parked outside the grand department store where the curator hosts her monthly salons, the building's tall windows glowing against the dark. Violet's finger hovers over her phone. The window is maybe ten minutes wide. Someone will correct the curator soon, or the curator will delete the comment, and the moment will close. Her hands shake. She's never approached this woman directly. Never risked the dismissal she knows is coming. She types the reply. Three sentences. Respectful. Specific. It includes a detail from her own work that shows she understands what the curator got wrong. She hits send before the fear can stop her. The phone screen goes dim in her hand, and the salon's light spills across the hood of her car as the door opens and guests begin to leave.
