Chapter 3

Violet refreshes the thread again from her car before heading into the store. The curator has posted twice more, both times responding to the thief. Then a new comment appears. Someone else in the curator's circle is asking where the thief studied textile history. The question sits there, polite but pointed. Violet pulls out one of her cigarettes, the kind with the purple ember that glows when she lights it. She doesn't smoke it yet. Just holds it between her fingers and watches the thread reload. The thief responds with something vague about workshops and independent study. Another member of the circle asks for specifics. The curator hasn't replied in six minutes. Violet can see the pattern forming. The thief is losing credibility in real time, and the curator is going quiet. This is the moment. Not to accuse. Not to rescue. To claim. She types fast. Posts her original timestamp from the draft folder she always keeps, showing she wrote the correction three minutes before the thief posted it. Then adds a second comment underneath with a detail she deliberately held back from her first reply — a reference to a specific archive collection the curator has cited before. Something only someone who actually knows the material would recognize. She hits send on both before she can talk herself out of it. The thread goes silent for two minutes. Then the curator responds directly to Violet's second comment, asking which archive and whether Violet has worked with their pre-war samples. The thief's name doesn't appear. Violet sits in her car next to a bright yellow mooncar with spinning rims, her cigarette still unlit. The kids' pool across the lot has fake fire fish swimming in circles, visible through the decorative rock formation. She watches the curator's comment collect likes. Her phone is shaking in her hand, but this time it's because she's smiling. She just made herself visible on her own terms, and the curator is looking directly at her.
