Chapter 15

Morning light woke Violet in the ruined village. She had a map of the peaks in her head now, but no wall could stop Kael's men once they climbed this high. The broken houses gave shelter, not safety. She needed a place they could hold, or a place they could vanish. She walked the streets alone to find one. Behind a fallen barn, she stopped. A nine-tailed fox stood in the weeds, three cubs pressed to its legs. Its fur shone pale in the sun. The fox did not run. It watched Violet, then turned and slipped through a gap in a collapsed wall. The cubs followed. Violet frowned. Wild foxes fled people. This one moved like it knew the way somewhere hidden. She pushed through the gap. Beyond lay a cracked doorway half buried in vines. The fox family had gone inside. Violet lit her flame sprite and stepped down into cool dark. The passage widened into a cellar cut deep into the mountain rock. One narrow mouth, easy to guard. Thick stone walls. No torch from below could find it. Here the brood could hide, and one rider could hold the entrance against many. Then the flame sprite's light caught something curled in the far corner. Scales, bright pink, shimmering. A dragon. It lifted its head and hissed. Wings snapped open, filling the cellar. Not a hatchling. Full grown, and cornered, and afraid. Violet froze. The fox and its cubs had run straight past the dragon without fear. They knew it. It had let them share this den. She had walked into the last wild dragon of these mountains, the one no rider had ever bonded. The one she had crossed a valley to find. The pink dragon crouched to spring. Violet did not draw her knife. She knelt slow and set the flame sprite on the floor between them. "Easy," she said. "I'm not here to chain you." Outside, a horn sounded far down the slope. Kael's men. They had reached the lower peaks. Violet's chest tightened. If she fled, she lost this refuge and this dragon both. If she stayed, the wild one might tear her open before she earned a single breath of trust. She held still. The pink dragon's wings trembled. Its eyes flicked from Violet to the cellar mouth, from the girl to the light. It had been alone a long time. Violet saw it in the ribs pressing through the scales. She reached into her pack, slow, and drew out a handful of pale berries. She rolled them across the stone. The dragon sniffed. It did not attack. It ate. Violet breathed out. She had found her fortress in the rock, and the wild dragon inside it. The horn sounded again, closer. She had a refuge now, and one chance to win the beast that guarded it before Kael's men arrived.
