Chapter 1

Vivienne Blackwood came to Scarecrow Fields to break a curse she could not yet name. She knew only its shape: every musician who played here after dark went silent. Not quiet. Silent. No voice, no song, ever again. She had traced one ritual composition across years, a piece built to open a threshold, and the trail had led her to this black-windowed village. If the curse and the music shared a root, she meant to find it. The tavern smelled of wet wood and spilled beer. Her bobbed hair and red lips marked her as a city woman the moment she stepped inside. Conversation stopped. She asked the barman about the musicians who had lost their voices. He wiped a glass and said nothing. A woman near the fire turned her back. Vivienne tried three more faces. Each one closed like a shutter. She set her imported cigarette case on the bar. The silver caught the lamplight. "For anyone who'll talk," she said. No one moved. The rule against outsiders held tighter than any bribe. Then a man spoke from the corner. "You're wasting good silver." He sat alone with an empty glass. Gray hair, a beard gone wild, an old service jacket worn thin at the elbows. A veteran, broke by the look of him, too far gone to care about the village rule. His eyes stayed sharp while the rest of him sagged. "They won't talk because they're scared," he said. "I'm not from here. And I stopped being scared a while back." Vivienne crossed the room and sat. "Marcus," he said, before she asked. "I read people. Used to keep men alive doing it." He looked at her case, then at her face. "You're not a reporter. You want something worse than a story." "I want to stop the silence," she said. "I think a piece of music causes it." Marcus went still. "Music." He turned the empty glass in his hand. "There's a place in this town full of old records. University, up past the fields. Professors wrote down the ones who went quiet. Names. Dates. I've seen the lit window there at night." His jaw tightened. "Something waits in buildings like that. I know the kind." "Will you take me?" He studied her a long moment. "My men went into a place I couldn't follow. I mean to follow this time." He stood and left coins he didn't have on the table. "Come on. Before someone here decides you shouldn't leave." Vivienne took back her cigarette case and followed him into the dark. The tavern doors closed behind them. Her cat slipped out between their feet, yellow eyes bright. She had her way in now, and a man who could read the danger she couldn't. Ahead, the university windows burned orange against the black sky, and the written record of every silenced musician waited inside.
