Vivienne stood outside the warehouse on Mercy Street, watching morning light cut through the high windows. She had spent three months searching for the right space to build her nightclub. This one had the bones she needed — high ceilings, thick walls, a single entrance she could control. She walked to the entrance where a thin stream of water ran beneath the door, glowing faintly with blues and purples like captured starlight. She had placed it there two days ago, a test of the building's drainage and a quiet mark of her intent. The landlord would recognize it when they arrived for the viewing. It meant someone had already been inside. But when she pushed open the door, a leather-bound book sat on the concrete floor just past the threshold. Gold filigree caught the light. She picked it up and opened to the first page. A contract, handwritten in precise script, with an offer dated that morning. The signature belonged to someone who had studied her methods — the placement was deliberate, the timing exact. They wanted her to know they had moved at the same hour she had. Vivienne closed the book and looked up at the sapphire-blue skylight that crowned the warehouse, the glass cut in geometric patterns that would scatter light across her dance floor. She had already decided this building would be hers. The rival bid was simply another door to open, another person who had mistaken coincidence for competition. She slipped the book into her coat and walked deeper into the space, her footsteps echoing off walls that already belonged to her.
