Chapter 1

Vivienne Silverquill unfolded the mysterious parchment across a reading table in the Common Archive. Someone had slipped it beneath her office door the previous evening without a name, a note, or any explanation. The strange fragment had occupied her thoughts ever since. Rather than alert the Silver Order, she had come here first. If someone else had seen markings like these before, she intended to find them. The Archive held knowledge gathered from every Order, stacked together beneath one roof. Vivienne searched shelf after shelf until a worn Glyphwright Ledger caught her eye. Its pages contained sketches of unusual markings collected over decades. Most bore little resemblance to the fragment she carried, but one faded drawing shared the same curious shape. It was not identical—only familiar enough to make her stop turning pages. Across the table sat a man quietly studying an oversized expedition folio covered with survey maps, excavation notes, and sketches of forgotten ruins. One margin held the same unusual marking. Vivienne looked from the ledger to the folio before finally speaking. “Excuse me… where did you find that?” The man glanced up, surprised by the question more than the interruption. “Alden Bronzemark,” he said. “Bronze Order relic surveyor.” He turned the folio so she could see the page. The marking appeared beside the map of a ruined chamber, accompanied only by measurements and location notes. “You know what it means?” Vivienne asked. Alden smiled faintly. “No.” “We only record where we find them.” He studied the fragment she had brought. “You Silver scholars always ask what these say.” “…Don’t you?” “We ask where they appear.” For a long moment neither of them spoke. Vivienne withdrew a thin alignment overlay from her satchel and carefully laid it across both pages, comparing the shapes rather than translating them. The markings refused to become words, yet subtle relationships began to emerge that neither book revealed on its own. It wasn’t proof. It wasn’t even an answer. But for the first time, Vivienne wondered whether she had been asking the wrong question all along. As she gathered the parchment, Alden closed his folio. “If these are showing up beneath the Row,” he said quietly, “then they’ve been speaking to every Order in a different language.” Vivienne looked around the Common Archive, where engineers, explorers, merchants, and scholars worked beneath the same roof. The mystery had not become smaller. It had become larger than the Silver Order could solve alone.
