Chapter 1

Vladimir stood at the window of his study and watched the supply wagons fail to arrive. The fortress needed stone, timber, iron — resources his merchants suddenly found reasons not to deliver. He'd sent letters. He'd made threats. Nothing changed. His daughters would arrive within the hour, summoned to discuss the project. One of them had done something that demanded his attention, something he could not ignore even as his fortress languished half-built in the northern hills. But the fortress was not entirely defenseless. He'd ordered a guard tower built from black stone at the site itself, torches burning day and night. Men he trusted stood watch there, keeping the workers who remained from deserting and turning away anyone who might interfere. The tower was small, nothing compared to what the finished fortress would become, but it served its purpose. It told anyone who approached that this place belonged to him now. When Damina and Astra arrived, he would show them the letter with the red seal. Then one of them would learn what it meant to threaten his work. Footsteps echoed in the corridor outside. Vladimir turned from the window and moved to his desk. The letter lay there, its red wax seal already broken. Inside, a merchant reported what he'd witnessed at a guard station on the eastern road — a courier dead, a princess standing over the body, a letter meant for Damion burning to ash in her hand. Astra had killed to keep a secret. Now she would learn that secrets, like fortresses, required more than violence to protect. The door opened. His daughters entered. Vladimir picked up the letter and waited for one of them to speak first. Damina spoke. She asked about the fortress, about the merchants who refused to send supplies. Vladimir placed the letter on the table between them. Astra's eyes found it immediately. Her face showed nothing, but her hand moved toward her side, then stopped. He told them what the letter said. He told them who had seen. Damina looked at her sister, then back at him. She asked what he would do. Vladimir watched Astra and saw the calculation behind her stillness. The fortress needed resources. The merchants needed proof that defying him carried consequences. His daughter had given him that proof. Now she would give him something else — a reason for the merchants to fear what happened to those who thought themselves beyond his reach.
