Chapter 1

Vogue drives the iron stake into the ground where the bridge once stood, where forty jobs disappeared into swamp water six years ago. The yellow ribbon tied to its top snaps in the wind. She steps back and looks at it — not a grave marker, but a starting line. The old bridge columns rise behind the stake like broken teeth. Moss covers the carved wood. Vines hang from the top beams where the span used to connect. Vogue walks to the nearest column and puts her palm flat against it. The wood holds solid despite six years of rot. She can work with this. The columns stay. They'll watch the new track go in, same way they watched the old one fall. By Tuesday, her seven workers will be here with the replacement ties. The bridge remnants won't be a monument to failure anymore. They'll be the thing people point to when they tell their grandchildren how the Express came back. But the stake needs something more permanent than ribbon. Vogue returns the next morning with the metalwork tree she'd commissioned from a welder two towns over. The trunk is iron rebar twisted together. The branches spread wide with fake bronze apples hanging from wire stems. She and three helpers dig a pit beside the stake and sink the tree's roots into cement. They build a fence around it from old railroad posts, painting each one dark to match the rotted columns. When the cement sets, Vogue unhooks one bronze apple and hangs it from the yellow ribbon on the stake. The tree stands now between old and new — the bridge that fell and the track that will rise. People will pass this spot on the working Express and remember both. A woman stops on the path near the tree that evening. She doesn't say anything to Vogue, just stands there looking at the bronze apples catching the late sun. Then she nods once and keeps walking. Two more people come by nightfall. One touches the fence posts. The other ties a second ribbon to the stake, this one blue. Vogue watches from her wheelbarrow twenty yards down the track where she's clearing brush. The tree is doing what she built it to do. It's giving people a place to see the work starting. By morning, there are four more ribbons on the stake and someone has cleared the weeds around the base of the fence. The site isn't just hers anymore.
