Chapter 5
Volk came to the gym the next morning with the casino night still fresh. O'Malley waited by the cage, phone in hand, grinning like a man holding a secret. "Sit down, old man," he said. "You're gonna want to hear this."
O'Malley turned the phone around. On the screen was a face Volk knew better than his own. Dark skin, flat-top fro, a lazy half-smile. Izzy. Volk's best friend. The man who texted him every week, who sent his kids birthday gifts, who once carried Volk's bags through an airport after a loss. "He called me," O'Malley said. "Your boy wants the fight. You versus him. He says you've gone soft chasing featherweight. He wants to prove it."
Volk took the phone. The message was real. Izzy's words, plain and cold. *Tell Volk I love him. Tell Volk I'll finish him.* A promoter had offered a date, a city, a check. All it needed was Volk's yes.
"That's your friend," O'Malley said, quieter now. "You don't have to take it."
But Volk thought about the taco. About turning forty. About the whispers that he was done. A man fights strangers for money. A man fights his brother to find out who he really is. He handed the phone back. "Call them," Volk said. "I'm in."
The word went out by noon. The internet caught fire. Best friends, now enemies. O'Malley pushed Volk hard that afternoon, harder than ever. "You can't spar him like you spar me," he said between rounds. "He knows your left hand. He's watched every fight you've ever had."
Volk's phone buzzed on the mat. Izzy. Volk stepped off and answered. For a second neither man spoke. Then Izzy laughed, warm as always. "You really said yes."
"You called me soft," Volk said.
"I called you old." A pause. "Brother, I need this one. I need to climb back. And there's no one in the world I'd rather climb over than you." The warmth stayed in his voice, but the words were steel. "I'm not gonna hug you in there. I'm gonna hurt you."
Volk closed his eyes. The friendship was real. So was the fight. "I know," he said. "Me too."
They hung up. O'Malley watched from the cage, no joke on his face now. "You good?"
Volk wrapped his hands tighter. He had kept his belt by beating younger men, faster men, strangers. Now he had signed to fight the one man who loved him and knew him down to the bone. The deal was done. No taking it back.
"Let's work," Volk said. He stepped into the cage. For the first time, the twilight of his career had a face. And it was a face he'd miss.
