Chapter 4
The brown pool lay still at the bend. The Rot slept, full for now. But Whimsey knew it would wake hungry again. She looked at Storm Rider, the druid who had come to help her close this wound. His golden sickle hung at his belt. He knew the earth, but he had told her plainly he could not move a spirit. That was her work. She had to speak to the Rot and teach it to spread.
"I will go into it," she said. "I speak to the river. I can speak to this."
Storm Rider frowned. "The Rot wants to eat. It does not want to leave."
"Then I must give it a reason." Whimsey rose on her dragonfly wings. The spray from the bend did not wet them. She hovered low over the brown water and let her wings dip into the surface.
At once she felt it. Not fear this time, but a thick, slow hunger. The Rot pressed against her like a weight. It did not know it was trapped. It only knew the roots were close and good to eat. She held still and let it feel her back.
"You are starving," she told it. "Because you are all in one place. There is nothing left here for you."
The Rot pulled at her. It wanted the roots of the old trees. She felt it reach toward the great oak that stood above the bend, its massive trunk anchored by thick, weathered roots.
"No," Whimsey said. "That tree is alive. You break what is dead. If you stay here, you will die with the roots you kill."
She showed it the forest the way her wings knew it. Fallen leaves under every tree. Old logs across the far slopes. Dead branches in a hundred hollows. Food spread thin across all the ground, not piled in one pool. The Rot shivered. It had forgotten it could move.
"Go where the dead things are," she said. "Everywhere, a little. That is how you live."
The pool began to turn. The brown water thinned at the edges. Whimsey lifted her wings and climbed, and the Rot climbed with her, drawn upward in pale threads. Storm Rider raised his sickle and swept it wide. His magic did not touch the spirit, but it called the earth open across the slopes, loosening soil and leaf and old wood so the Rot would have somewhere to land.
"Now," Whimsey said.
She spread her arms and flew out over the forest floor. The Rot broke apart behind her. It scattered into the leaf litter, into the fallen logs, into the dark soil under the trees. Each thread found dead wood and sank in to feed. The pool at the bend drained to clear mud. The great oak's roots stood free of the sickness. For the first time, the Rot was not a weight. It was a quiet thread through the whole wood, doing its true work.
Whimsey landed on the bank, breathing hard. Where the pool had been, a pale shape rose from the mud. It stood on four slim legs, wrapped in soft motes of dust and faint traces of decay. Its tail curled like smoke. It looked at her with gold eyes. This was what the Rot became once it was spread and fed and free. A spirit of Nutrition returning the rejuvenated minerals, turning dead things into living soil.
Storm Rider lowered his sickle. "You moved it," he said. "I have never seen that done."
"It only needed to remember how to wander," Whimsey said.
The pale spirit stepped past them and vanished into the trees, leaving a trail of green in the dirt behind it. Grass pushed up where it walked. The forest drank the change.
Whimsey turned back toward the river. The water ran clear over the stones now, every stone she knew by name. She flew to the stretch where the old forest met the water and dipped her wings into the current. She did not feel fear through them. She did not feel sickness. She felt the river breathing, slow and whole.
Deep in the riverbed, something stirred that had slept a long time. The river spirit woke. Its blessing moved up through the water and out along the banks, into the roots, into the leaves, into the fading forest. The old magic came back. The oaks drew it in and stood taller. Whimsey hovered in the clean spray and watched her home fill with light again. She had guarded this water longer than she could recall. Now it was whole, and so was she.
