Chapter 1

Whisper Nightbeam wanted one thing more than food or sleep: a friend he could trust without doubt. But trust came hard to a cat raised alone in a dark den, whose mother died to a bear when he was small. So he kept to the edges of the world. This morning he had come to his favorite patch of wild catmint, where dry grasses swayed and purple blooms bent in the wind. He liked to roll here where no one watched. Today someone watched. A shape stood in the treeline. Whisper caught the shine of eyes, the still weight of a body waiting. His legs locked. His heart slammed. He could not run, could not call out, could not even turn his head away. He crouched low in the catmint and waited for the shape to leave. It did not leave. It stepped forward, slow, pushing through the dry grass. Whisper squeezed his blue eyes shut. He thought of his mother, of the last night she went out and never came back. He thought that hiding had never once kept him safe. So he opened his eyes. He forced his voice out, thin and shaking. "Who are you? Why do you watch me?" The shape came into the light. It was a cat, large and slender, her fur soft and shining, her eyes deep purple. She stopped an arm's length away and set something down in the grass between them. A small bundle of dried herbs, valerian root and catmint, tied with pale strands. "You froze," she said. "I watched to see if you would." Her voice was calm, almost warm. "I brought this so you would know I mean no harm. The catmint is yours. I only added the rest." Whisper stared at the bundle. No stranger had ever brought him a gift. He sniffed it. The scent was sharp and sweet and soft all at once. His shaking slowed. "My name is Raven," she said. "Raven Catclaw. I have watched this clearing for days. Not to hunt you. I wanted to know the cat who rolls in the catmint and thinks no one sees." Heat crossed Whisper's face. He almost bolted. But she had named her fault plainly, and she had not lunged, and she waited for him the way no one ever had. He picked up the bundle in his teeth. He set it down again, closer to her, an answer without words. "Whisper," he said. "Whisper Nightbeam." Raven's whiskers lifted. She lay down in the catmint, careful, leaving space between them. She did not crowd him. She only stayed. Whisper let out a long breath. The stranger at the treeline was gone. In her place lay a cat who had chosen to be seen. He did not trust her yet. But for the first time, he wanted to.
