William bolted the door as the rain hammered the roof. His small cottage sat alone in the forest, its stone walls steady, its cowprint curtains drawn against the dark. Somewhere past the trees lived a woman he meant to reach one day, slowly, on her terms. For now, the storm pinned him here. Water rose fast around the porch. By dusk, the paths were gone. His home had become an island, the warm wooden door the only thing between him and the flood. He lit a lamp and opened his leather journal. He wrote slow lines about patience, about not pushing, about waiting the way trees wait. The work calmed his hands. A soft thump hit the door. William opened it a crack. A small cedar-marked salamander clung to the step, frills trembling. Beside it sat a clear jar, sealed with wax, a folded note tied to its neck, an opal heart glowing softly inside. William carried both in. The storm had broken something open in the forest, and the forest had sent him a message. He set the jar on the table and stared at it. Whatever came next, it would not wait for fair weather.
