Chapter 1

Willow Ashenmist counted every axe strike the night two blades took her tree. She still counts. Now she is a phantom rooted to one cut stump, and she wants only one thing: a quiet patch of soil where the lost spirits of this town can finally stop wandering and rest. A grove needs living roots. A stump has none. So the spirits drift past her each dusk, and she cannot hold them. The stump sits near the edge of the haunted forest. People stop there to talk. Willow hears pieces of them, borrowed weight she never asked to carry. Tonight she heard footsteps instead of words. Heavy boots. A man set an axe against her stump and sat down on it like it was his chair. She knew the sound of that blade. It was one of the two. "You cut me down," Willow said. Her voice moved through the wood under him. Grendel Blackwood did not jump. He looked at the stump as if it had finally said something worth hearing. His beard was streaked with road dust. His hands were scarred from years of holding the same handle. "I've cut a hundred trees," he said. "Don't remember yours." "I remember every strike. There were forty-one." He was quiet. Then: "I'm looking for a man. Taught him everything. He killed my child." He turned the axe over. "I'm going to finish it." Willow felt the old anger. But she had grown a ring since the felling, and the newest ring was wanting something for herself. She did not want his debt. She wanted roots. "You took my body," she said. "Give me a chance at a new one." Grendel frowned. "Trees don't bargain." "This one does. There is soft ground past the twisted trees. Quiet soil. I cannot reach it. I'm tied here." She paused. "But you carry a blade that frees things from where they stand." He understood before she finished. He stood and gripped the axe. "If I split this stump," he said, "you scatter. Or you don't. I don't know which." "Then we both find out." He set his feet. He swung. Willow counted again, out of habit. One. Two. The stump cracked down the center on the third strike. A thin root, still green under the dead wood, tore loose with a sound like a held breath. She did not scatter. She felt herself slide along that living root, through the dirt, away from the stump, toward the quiet ground past the trees. She came to rest in cool soil. For the first time since the felling, she was not bound to the place where she died. Behind her, Grendel shouldered his axe and walked into the forest, toward the man he meant to kill. Willow pressed down into the soil. The ground here was quiet. But it was not empty. Something older was already waiting beneath it.
