Chapter 15

Willow walked away from the square without looking back. The memorial stone stood behind her with her name carved into it, but she was alive and the cult was finished. The path ahead led out of Serpent Village, toward the edge of the swamp where the moss hung thick and the water turned dark. She had no home here anymore. No orders. No purpose the elders had given her. Just the swamp and whatever lay beyond it. She followed the trail past empty huts and abandoned ritual sites until she reached the boundary marker. A wooden arrow sign pointed north, its surface thick with moss. Beyond it lay open marsh and freedom. She stopped and pulled the moss stone ring from her pocket—the one her neighbor had returned to her. It was the only thing she carried from her old life. She slipped it onto her finger and kept walking. The swamp opened before her, and then she saw it. A willow tree stood alone at the water's edge, its branches cascading down like curtains of green. Initials were carved deep into the trunk—old marks from lives lived before hers. She recognized the tree from stories Ol' Man Croaker used to tell, back when she still listened to such things. It marked the place where the village ended and the wild began. Willow touched the bark once, then stepped past the tree into the marsh beyond. The swamp had shown her what it needed to—freedom, memory, and a way forward. She didn't know where the path would lead, but she knew she was done serving anything but herself. The beast was free. The cult was broken. And Willow was walking away for good.
