Chapter 1

Willow Hopper was halfway through her second jam pastry when the stranger found her outside the message depot. The woman wore a gray coat and clutched a small wooden box like it contained something precious. She stopped three feet away, eyes bright, and said the thing Willow had been waiting her whole career to hear: that a misdelivery had changed everything. The woman opened the box. Inside sat a dented metal mug, pale blue paint flaking off in spots, handle scratched and worn. She'd received it six months ago in a package meant for someone three streets over. The mug had belonged to her grandmother, the note inside explained — except it hadn't been her grandmother. It was a stranger's grandmother. But the words about morning tea and patience and taking time to notice small beautiful things had arrived on the worst day of the woman's life. She'd kept the mug. Started using it. Changed her whole routine around it. Now she worked as a botanist, and she needed a scout. Someone who noticed things others missed. Someone who trusted instinct over maps. Willow set down her pastry, jam still on her fingers, and grinned so wide her face hurt. The scout guild application had asked for references — she'd left that section blank. The woman pulled out a folded letter. She'd opened a tavern two months ago, all warm wood and fresh thatch, herbs growing in window boxes. She needed someone to find rare plants in places maps didn't cover. The pay was real. The work would prove Willow could navigate by feel and deliver what mattered most. Willow looked at the mug again, at the woman's hopeful face, at the letter with her name written in careful script. Her misdelivery had built this. Her chaos had made something good. She took the letter and tucked it into her messenger bag, right next to her scout guild application. This was how you proved yourself worthy — not by following roads, but by trusting that wrong turns could lead somewhere better.
