Chapter 1

Wren Ashvale had come to Froghollow to marry the princess. Instead, the court laughed at his treaty. He stood before the swamp lords in his rival uniform, a sealed peace scroll in his gloved hand, and every face said the same thing. Liar. He had earned that name. For years he had traded honeyed words for advantage, and now the truth cost him nothing, because no one would take it. "Read it," Wren said. His voice stayed calm. "I offer peace. No tricks." A lord spat into the mud. "You said that in three courts before ours." Alora sat near the dais, copper curls bright against the gloom. She loved him. He knew it, and it frightened him, because loving him could get her killed. When she thought no one watched, she pressed a hand to her chest, over the hollow where her heart should beat. Wren met her eyes and looked away first. Then Dax Nightbloom entered. The swamp heat did nothing to him. His frost-white coat stayed dry. Wildflowers pushed up through the mud where his boots pressed down, and he stepped around them like they annoyed him. The lords went quiet. Alora's kingdom had promised her to this silver-haired man, and everyone in the room knew it. "The messenger lies," Dax said, smiling. "He always has. Send him home in pieces." Wren had one card left. He reached into his coat and drew out a small caged creature. It had dark fur, keen eyes, and thin wings that caught the torchlight. "This sprite," Wren said, "only reveals itself near an honest heart. Watch." He opened the cage. The sprite crouched, wings folded, staring at the crowd. Nothing. The lords began to jeer. Dax laughed. Wren pulled the signet ring from his finger. Blue and gold, the mark of his old court, the badge of every lie he had told. He held it over a torch. "I break with them," he said. "Watch what I burn to prove it." He dropped the ring into the flame. Gold softened. The crowd fell silent. The sprite lifted its head. It flew straight to Wren and landed on his shoulder, glowing soft and clear. Then it turned toward Dax and hissed, wings snapping flat. It would not go near him. A lord rose. "The creature knows him true. And it names the other false." Gasps spread through the hall. Dax's smile cracked. "A trick," he said, but his voice had lost its ice. Behind him, wildflowers withered where he stood. Wren breathed out. For the first time, the court looked at him and did not see a liar. They saw a man who had burned his own name to the ground. Alora smiled at him openly now. But Dax fixed Wren with a cold stare, and Wren understood. He had won the room. He had also made an enemy who never sweated, never bled, and never forgot. The peace was believed. Now he had to survive the man it exposed.
