Chapter 7

The wedding day came clear and hot. Wren wore the antler-crowned robe Aldric had pressed on him, white and gold, the collar branching like living wood. Alora rode beside him on the road to the shrine. The songbird cart sat in his lap. He watched the trees for silver hair and white coats. Aldric had promised the ambush. So had Elderwen. Wren gripped the cage and waited for it. Dax stepped from the treeline half a mile out. Wildflowers opened in the mud where he stood. His coat stayed clean. He held no weapon. That frightened Wren more than a blade. "You reached the road," Dax said. "You will not reach the roots." He lifted one hand. The mud ahead churned. Vines rose across the path, thick as a man's arm, and knit into a wall. Alora climbed down. "Move it," she told Wren. "I will hold him." "You cannot hold me," Dax said. "You have no heart to spend." Her hand went flat to her hollow chest. She did not flinch. "I have hands," she said. She walked straight at him. Dax raised more vines. Wren saw the trap then. Dax wanted him to panic, to hack at the wall and waste the day. Aldric's warning came back. The road is not safe. Wren did not draw. He looked at the cage in his hands. The rite needed a living gift set free. Aldric had said free it at the altar. But the words did not name the place. Wren opened the little door. The songbird shot out. It flew low over the vine wall and dropped a bright shape into Dax's face. Dax jerked back. His hand slipped. For one breath the vines sagged. Wren drove the cart forward through the gap. Alora caught the rail and swung up beside him. The wall closed behind them on empty road. Dax's shout followed, then fell away. The silver-root shrine stood ahead, pale stone wrapped in roots the color of old coins. Aldric waited at the door, medal on his chest. Wren entered from the east, as taught. He spoke the binding words clean. His tongue did not catch once. "I ask to walk beside her," he said. "Not to own her." Aldric nodded once. The empty cage sat on the altar. The gift was already gone, spent on the road, and no bird remained to free. Wren's stomach dropped. "The gift," he said. Aldric looked at the open door. The songbird sat on a root outside, alive, free. "It left your hand living," the old fae said. "The rite asks no more." The words held. The claim held. Alora took Wren's hand at the altar and did not let go. But Dax was still on the road, uncaught, and now he had watched the wedding he swore would never happen.
