Chapter 27

The torches reached the courtyard. Aurora's father came first, tall and gray-bearded, a sword at his hip. Six guards spread behind him with spears leveled. They stopped when they saw the vine hut and the gray shape inside it. "That is the beast that took my daughters into the swamp," the man said. His voice was low and hard. "Step away from it, boy." The tiger stirred at the noise. Its head lifted. Its ears went flat. Xavier felt the muscle under his hand tighten again. One lunge, one snap of those jaws, and the guards would run it through. Aurora had warned him. Her father would not spare it twice. Xavier did not step away. He stayed low in the doorway, between the spears and the tiger. "Please," he said. "Don't move fast. It's scared, not hunting." "It is a killer." The man raised a hand. The guards edged closer. The silver fox cub slipped out from under the tiger's chest. It trotted across the cobbles, tail high, straight toward the guards. One spear point dipped and tracked it. Xavier's chest went cold. But the cub only sat down at the old man's boots and looked up. Small. Harmless. The tiger watched the cub go. It did not charge. It made a low sound and laid its chin back on the planks, following the one thing it loved out into the open without fear. The old man looked at the cub. Then at the tiger, gone still and calm behind the leaves. A shape lumbered through the open gate behind the guards. Berry. The black bear moved slow, paws up, showing he held nothing. The guards spun their spears toward him. Berry stopped. "He raised that tiger from a cut leg," Berry said. His voice was gentle, steady. "I watched him do it. Six days feeding it by hand. It followed him here through wolves and deep water. It has not touched one of you." Aurora stepped up beside her father. "It's true. I dyed its coat myself. It carried me across the bog and never once turned on me." The old man's hand stayed up a long moment. The cub pressed against his boot. He looked at his daughter, then at the calm gray beast, then at the boy shielding it with his own body. He lowered his hand. "Spears down," he said. The guards hesitated. "Down." The points dropped. Xavier let out the breath he had held. The old man crouched and let the cub sniff his fingers. "The hut stays," he said. "The beast stays in it. If it steps one paw wrong, I end it. Understand me, boy?" "I understand," Xavier said. The man stood and walked back toward his keep, guards trailing. Aurora sagged against the doorframe. The tiger was safe inside stone walls now. But it lived on her father's word alone, caged in a courtyard, one wrong move from death. A wild thing did not stay wild in a cage. Xavier knew he could not tame it here.
