Chapter 12
The crawlspace ran on for a hundred feet, then split in two. Zach stopped at the fork. One branch bent left, one bent right. Both dropped into black. He needed the one that ran north, toward Darkthorne's tower and the fight that might send him home. But the walls gave him nothing. No stars, no sun, no way to read direction.
"Which way?" he whispered.
Lyra crawled up beside him. She was the elf the mage guild had sent, the one who felt living bodies through stone. Her orb hung dead on her belt, a spent spark. Without it she looked smaller, unsure. "The orb told me north," she said. "It's gone. I can't guess."
Raven pressed past them both. Her cat ears turned toward the left branch, then the right. She held still, breathing slow. "Quiet," she said. "Both of you."
Zach waited. Raven was the King's daughter, but down here she moved like a hunter, not a princess. She had caught his wrist above the guards' path and hauled him up. He trusted her ears more than his own eyes.
"Air," Raven said at last. "Feel it on the right. It moves. The left branch is dead." She held her palm to the right tunnel. "Cold air comes from outside. From somewhere open. North is where the tower rises, and the tower is open to the sky."
Lyra frowned. "Or it leads to a drain. Or a pit."
"It leads out," Raven said. "Dead stone gives back warm, still air. This is cold and moving. I've hunted enough caves to know."
Zach looked from one woman to the other. Lyra had guided them by magic until the magic ran out. Now the magic was gone, and only Raven's senses were left. He made his choice.
"Right," he said. "We follow the air."
They crawled. The passage narrowed. Grit bit Zach's palms. Then the cold grew stronger, and the black ahead turned gray. A thin light leaked through a grate in the stone.
Zach pressed his face to the bars. Below and beyond, he saw open ground under a night sky. A black tower stood against the stars, tall and dark, exactly as the King's song had promised. Darkthorne's fortress. They had reached its edge.
But the grate showed more. Between the crawlspace and the tower spread a wide yard. Torches ringed it. Guards stood in rows, not walking rounds now, but waiting. An alarm horn hung on a post. They had found the northern path, and the path ran straight into an armed courtyard with no shadow to hide them.
Raven crouched at his shoulder and looked down. Her ears flattened. "We found north," she said.
"Yeah," Zach said. He gripped the grate. The way forward was clear at last. It just led through fifty men.
