Chapter 39

The morning after his breakthrough, Zach woke sore and hollow. Controlling the blade had left him drained, as if he had given it his own blood. Geneva watched him stumble to the fire. "You held your power," the old man said. "Now Lyra and Ayla will teach you to keep it. A sword that empties you is a sword that kills you." Lyra set a row of small vials on the table. She had loved measuring things since the guild, and her hands moved fast. "When you push out the white light, you burn yourself," she said. "Watch how much you spend. Pull back before you're empty." She lit a flame in her palm, then shrank it to a spark. "Small. Steady. Not a bonfire every swing." Zach drew the blade in the clearing. He floated it and struck the stump with a short pulse of light, not a wave. His legs held. He tried again, then again, each time spending less. Ayla stood beside him, her silver crystal staff glowing. When his hands shook, she pressed the crystal to his chest. Warmth poured back into his arms. "Healing isn't just for wounds," she said. "I can feed you strength mid-fight. But only if you leave some for me to lift." Then she handed him a vial. He drank. The fog behind his eyes cleared. By afternoon Zach could strike ten times before tiring. He learned the vials, the healing, the small pulls of light. He learned to fight all day instead of burning out in one blast. Under the cottage eaves, Raven and Talon sat cleaning their weapons. "You cut the heads off my dolls," Raven said. "All of them. Lined them up on the windowsill." Talon almost smiled behind his mask. "You cried for a week. Then you started sharpening sticks." He wiped a katana. "You turned out fine, little sister." He glanced at the clearing, where Ayla steadied Zach again. "So. You and the swordsman. Is it serious?" Raven's ears flicked. "It's serious." She met his eyes. "He said he'd stay. Even knowing what Father is." Talon nodded slowly. He said nothing else. "Don't just sit there," Raven said. "What about you and Lyra? Five years she waited. You going to make her wait five more?" Talon looked at the elf sorting her vials. "After the war," he said. "If we live." "Coward," Raven said, but she was smiling. By dusk Zach stood in the clearing, blade floating, and held the light steady for a full minute without falling. He called it back and stayed on his feet. Geneva watched from the doorway. "You can fight now, not just flare," he said. "You are ready to face what comes north." Then Lyra straightened, her hand on her tracking map. Her face went pale. "He's moved," she said. "Malachar. He's reached the second seal."
