Chapter 50
The mixed companies had barely reached their posts when the horn sounded. Zach stood on the great trunk's high balcony, map still fresh in his hand, when a scout dropped from a swaying bough. "The tower," she gasped. "It stopped moving. It's coming here. Whiskerbark." Below him, the layered treehouses lit with torchlight. The first strike had chosen the King's own kingdom. Zach could not leave for the world's center until he knew these walls would hold without him.
King Aldric came fast for a stocky man his age. He gripped the rail beside Zach, crown crooked, eyes on the plain. A black spire crawled toward them across the grass on no legs Zach could name. "My people are in those branches," Aldric said. "Old Whiskerbark has never fallen. It will not fall tonight." Raven stepped to her father's side. For a breath the two cat-eared royals stood the same way, jaws set.
The tower halted. Its base split open. Hooded figures poured out, then twisted into demons with red eyes and claws. Zach turned to his people. "Lyra, ice from the branches. Talon, the ground. Ayla, keep everyone breathing. Raven, with me on the wall." They moved without argument. Talon dropped into the dark before Zach finished speaking.
Then the airships came. Fairhaven's fleet swept over the treetops, hulls groaning, crews leaning from the rails. Crossbow volleys rained down. Demons that shrugged off steel fell to bolts through the skull. Lyra flung frost from a high bough, and the ice cracked their claws like glass. Ayla's light knit a soldier's torn arm even as he swung his blade.
Zach did not need the sword's full fury. He fed it small pulses, precise strikes, dropping one demon per burst while Ayla's magic held him steady. Beside him Raven fired, ducked, transformed, and slid between claws as a cat before rising to fire again. Aldric fought at the root-gate himself, an old king with an axe, roaring his people back into the line whenever they broke.
By dawn the plain lay quiet. The demons were dead. The black tower, empty now, ground its way back north across the grass. Whiskerbark still stood. Zach counted the branches full of frightened faces that had lived through the night. The mixed companies had worked. Airship, ice, and blade together had held one town, and every town could hold the same way.
Aldric wiped his axe and looked at Zach for a long moment. "They held," the King said. "My walls, your plan. We do not need you standing on them." It was permission, and a shove. Zach looked at Raven. She had known this hour was coming since Fairhaven. "The line holds without me," Zach said. "So I go below. To the fire." He no longer wondered where he fit in this world. Tonight he had led kings. Now he had to walk the dark road alone, before Malachar reached the crystal first.
