Chapter 54

The cave floor sloped down into red heat. Zach led the way, sword raised, white light pushing back the dark. Behind him came Raven, Talon, Lyra, Ayla, and Garrok. But Lyra had warned them of two hearts ahead, and now Zach saw the true problem. The tunnel to the fire ran miles into the mountain. And it was not empty. The first monster dropped from the ceiling. It had too many legs and a mouth full of hooks. Garrok met it with his axe, splitting it before it landed. "Move," he growled. "We do not stop for every crawling thing." But more came. Pale beasts poured from cracks in the walls, drawn by the crystal's power. The path to Malachar had become a gauntlet. Zach knew they could not fight through mile after mile like this. They would tire. Ayla could not heal them forever. He remembered Geneva's lesson from the swamp. Not one blade, but many, joined as one. "Circle me," he shouted. "Hands on the sword. Now." Raven pressed her palm to the flat of the blade first, her cat ears flat against her head. Talon set his hand beside hers without a word. Lyra reached in, her purple eyes bright. Ayla and Garrok closed the ring. The light on the sword flared white, then blinding. Zach felt them all inside it, felt Lyra's sense of every heartbeat in the stone, felt Garrok's raw strength. "Left branch is a dead end," Lyra said, her voice steady through the bond. "The fire lies straight ahead. Malachar has not moved." Zach swept the sword in a wide arc. White light rolled out in a wave, filling the tunnel wall to wall. The beasts screamed and burst to ash. He did not drain himself. He pulsed the light in bursts, the way Ayla and Lyra had trained him, and Ayla's healing fed back through the ring to hold him upright. They walked forward as one. Every monster that charged met the wave and died. Mile after mile fell behind them. The heat climbed. The walls glowed. Garrok laughed once, low and fierce, as a pack of hooked things dissolved before his eyes. Then the tunnel opened. The eternal fire filled a great round chamber, a pillar of flame rising into the dark. No more monsters came. The gauntlet was behind them. Ahead, at the edge of the fire, a cloaked figure held a black crystal over the flames. Malachar turned. The scar on his face caught the firelight. "You crossed the whole mountain," he said. "Impressive. But too late." Lyra gasped and broke from the ring. "The slow heart," she whispered. "It beats faster now. Zach, the crystal is taking flesh." Zach lowered the sword. The path was clear at last. But the second heartbeat had begun to wake, and it was no longer old and slow. Darkthorne was becoming flesh, and now stood between Zach and home.
