Chapter 78

Zach crossed the last bridge alone. The mind-controlled villagers filled the streets behind him, hundreds of empty faces turned his way. They stood between him and the tower like a wall of the very people he came to save. He knew the truth now. Any blast of his blade, any charge from Garrok, and he would cut down the missing farmers and children. He climbed the tower stairs instead, sword down, hands open. He would reach the keeper himself. The pale man waited in the high room. Long black hair framed dark, tired eyes. He crossed his arms and studied Zach without fear. "Who are you?" the keeper asked. His voice was flat, almost bored. "Zach Brenner." He kept his blade lowered. Behind him, on the streets below, Raven and Talon held their weapons still. Lyra pressed her hands to the stone, ready. Ayla stood with her staff dim, waiting for his signal. Garrok gripped his axe but did not swing. They trusted him to try words first. The keeper's eyes narrowed at the name. He lifted one hand, and the fog answered. It poured up through the streets and rose around Zach's group in a thick gray wall. Zach braced for the sleep it had given every villager. It did not come. The mist curled over his skin and slid off. It rolled past Raven, past Talon, past all of them, and left their minds untouched. The keeper lowered his hand slowly. He stared at the fog that would not obey. "It has no hold on you," he said. Something changed in his face. The boredom broke. "You feel like the old power. The light that ended the great sorcerer." He stepped forward. "You must be the ones who defeated Darkthorne." Zach did not lower his guard. "We are. And we've come for these people." "Then you already did the hard part." The keeper closed his eyes. His arms spread wide. The fog stopped fleeing Zach's group and turned back toward the tower. It streamed in from every street, every alley, every sleeping mouth. It rushed up the walls and poured into the pale man's chest. He shook as it filled him. The blue fire in the streets guttered and died. Below, the villagers dropped to their knees. Hundreds of them woke at once. A child cried out. A woman looked at her own hands as if she had never seen them. Raven caught a falling man and steadied him. "They're free," she called up. "Zach, they're awake." The keeper sank to the floor, gray to the bone, the whole fog inside him now. "I held them," he breathed. "I could not stop it. Only hold it." His dark eyes found Zach's. "It came from below. It is still coming. And now it is only in me." Zach knelt beside him. The living shield was gone. But the fog had a source deeper than this city, and the man who caged it was dying.
