Chapter 1

Zadie Rose woke with scorch marks on her own hands. She had cast nothing. The verse had cast itself while she slept, dragged from her lips by the angry second self she kept caged inside her chest. All her life she had written poems that bent the world. Now her own words turned on her in the dark. She wanted only one thing: to free that furious self cleanly, with a perfect verse, before it broke loose and burned her from the inside. The cottage smelled of smoke and moon roses. Blackened lines curled across the candlelit walls where her sleep-spells had struck. Zadie pressed her palms to the floorboards and tried to breathe slow. The fury pushed back. It hummed under her ribs like a trapped wasp, testing every seam. She could not fix this alone. So she walked to the one person who might teach her. Amara Songweaver sat on the cottage steps as if she had waited all night. The old Verse-Keeper was blind, her eyes pale as milk, her white braids heavy with the damp air. She had trained a dozen witches to hold their power. She had buried three who failed. Zadie had avoided her for a year, ashamed to admit she needed a teacher at all. "You're leaking," Amara said, before Zadie spoke. "I heard it in your footsteps. Your rage walks a half-step ahead of you." "Teach me to bind it," Zadie said. "At least while I sleep." Amara held out her hand. In her palm lay a pendant of cold obsidian wrapped in copper. A purple rune glowed at its center. "This will drink what spills out," Amara said. "But it only works if you stop fighting the thing inside you. A cage you hate rattles louder. Speak to her. Name her. Then let the stone hold what you give it." Zadie took the pendant. It felt like ice against her throat. That night she lay down and did not clench her jaw. She opened her book by candlelight and wrote three plain lines to the self she had feared for years. Not a spell. A letter. *I know your name. I know your hunger. Rest now, and I will carry you until you are free.* The fury surged, then slowed. The rune flared bright purple and pulled the heat from her chest, sip by sip. Zadie slept without burning a single wall. She woke to clean hands. But the pendant had darkened. Its glow was dim, nearly spent. Amara stood in the doorway, her face grim. "It filled in one night," the old woman said. "I have never seen that. The stone will hold her for now. But it is already almost full." Zadie closed her fingers around the cooling obsidian. She had bought herself time. She had not bought much of it.
